Tetsuo Hara to Launch Keiji Spinoff Naoe Kanetsugu

Posted by Kristen Barghout

Fist of the North Star manga artist to revisit samurai friend of Maeda Keiji

This year’s 46th issue of Shinchosha’s Weekly Comic Bunch magazine has announced on Friday that Fist of the North Star artist Tetsuo Hara is launching a spinoff to his Hana no Keiji -Kumo no Kanata ni- manga about the historical samurai figure Maeda Keiji. The new Gifū Dōdō Naoe Kanetsugu -Maeda Keiji Tsuki-Gatari- series will begin in the magazine on November 7. According to Hara’s comments in the current Weekly Comic Bunch issue, he feels that he didn’t delve far enough into the life of Maeda’s close friend, the samurai Naoe Kanetsugu, when he drew Keiji from 1990 to 1993. A four-installment Keiji short story that focuses on Maeda and Naoe’s first meeting is already running in the magazine.

Hara and his writer Mio Aso loosely based their samurai stories on a novel written by Keiichiro Ryu. The defunct North American manga publisher Gutsoon! Entertainment published portions of the original Keiji manga in its Monthly Raijin Comics magazine.

A Dragonball series lookback

Posted by Kristen Barghout

Yesterday I wrote about my serious disliking of the Dragonball GT series, and I mentioned how I actually like the original Dragonball series written by Akira Toriyama.

Well I have decided to discuss that today, and go into the story a bit for those who are unaware of this series. Dragonball follows the story of Goku, a young boy with a tail (from the legend of the Monkey King) who encounters friends, foes and unusual beings along his journey.

The Dragonball interested me because I got to see how it all began, how everyone met, became friends, rivals and even lovers in some cases. It was nice to have a bit of back history to the characters I had spent so much of my life watching.

I found that the adult humour in the Dragonball series was just right - the kind where children jsut think it’s funny without truly understanding the joke. And the personalities were perfect, Goku did actually act and have the mannerisms of a child, as well as the lack of knowledge that a child has…I suppose that innocence that we all lose as we grow.

Also, I can’t even name a saga with which I was disappointed. I loved the Red Ribbon saga, and it was brilliant because I had seen the Cell Saga in Dragonball Z and it provided me with the history of hatred between the characters…just truly awesome.

To me, the fact that this series was such a hit with me, simply emphasises how much GT lost by not having the input of the original creator. It is a shame as the GT series did have much potential, but failed to deliver…such a pity.

A Dragonball GT lookback and review

Posted by Kristen Barghout

I have been a fan of the Dragonball series for many years, in fact, I believe I was probably about 13 when first watched the Dragonball Z Saiyan Saga, and that’s going backI nearly ten years ago now. It had only just aired in the UK when I started watching it, and for years to come, I was in awe of this awesome cartoon.

I remember having to wait months for a new saga to either begin, or for the saga to continue (I think the Freiza saga lasted about a year and a half 0_0). I also remember when they announced that Dragonball and GT would finally be coming to the UK screens. It was an amazing time for me.

Now, I will leave the subject of Dragonball for another day, and I am going to focus on the ‘travesty’ that was Dragonball GT. Now I know that my statement may make others hate me, but please, allow me to continue.

You see, I loved the fact that everyone had grown up, it was a new chapter in the Dragonball universe. However, as the series progressed, I became more and more withdrawn from the series. Mainly, this was because the characters had actually changed. And this is no simple matter of character development, it actually stems from the lack of interaction in the creation progress of Akira Toriyama, and his input was seriously missed.

You see, the main issue I had was the fact that Vegeta had changed so much (and undoubtedly this made emphasised even more in the poorly dubbed American version) and he was no longer the anti-hero that I had grown up with and loved. Instead, he was just old, and flat…as in his whole character was just two dimensional, lacking in any personality.

There was also the issues with the Saga’s that were very hit or miss, and many of which (Babidi) suffered for the length of the saga being too long, and some, (Super 17 Saga) suffered for being too short. I mean, they could have done so much more with the 17 Saga and the re-introduction of a key character that had been missing in action since the Cell Saga in Dragonball Z.

Overall I was a little disheartened from the whole Dragonball GT series, the awful “Let’s keep Goku as a kid” theme which added nothing to the plot, story or entertainment, as well as the poor choice of saga’s such as the black star dragonball’s etc. It was like watching someone flog a dead horse, and in the end I simply stopped watching. And that’s me, the person who spent all her pocket money on DBZ merchandise from the age of thirteen. I was so down heartened that I even contemplated boycotting watching the Dragonball saga.

Now, don’t get me wrong as there are some good points to the Dragonball GT series, such as the really cool new super Saiyan levels, which I am sure many will agree are awesome, and the fact that we are shown how much stronger Goku really is than any of the other Z heroes (many of which are absent from the series), and the fact that Vegeta only manages to increase his Saiyan power through the use of technology.

But this is a series that should only be watching in small doses, as over exposure to such drivel that exists in the majority of this series may cause internal damage to the individual. I am currently re-watching the series to see if it does have any truly redeeming features…I must add, I am at the Super 17 Saga, and so far…it does not. But don’t let me put you off; if you love Dragonball and Dragonball GT, it’s definitely worth completing the series.

Anime Wallpapers

Posted by Kristen Barghout

Today, you may have noticed that I had a new page added to my website.  This is for the Anime Wallpapers and Anime Images that I am uploading.  I have been working on this all day so far, and there are many more to come, and I will upload them as I have the opportunity.

So far today, the images that am uploading are Dragonball Wallpapers, Chobits Wallpapers and Naruto Wallpapers, however I am going add other categories to this such as Anime Girls, Hentai, Yaoi, Lolita, and many more.  If there is a category that you would like to see, please comment, and I shall endeavor to include such images.

The reason I have decided to make an Anime Wallpapers page is because I decided that an Anime Website requires Anime Wallpapers!  I cant believe I had not thought of this sooner.  So I hope you enjoy the images.  Some of them I have created myself with the use of Photoshop.

In order to view the full images, click the thumbnails and you will be redirected to another site where you can then click on that image to view the full size image.  I hope you like them, I have worked very hard on them ^_^.

Speed Racer

Posted by Kristen Barghout

With the recent release of the new live action Speed Racer movie…which by the way looks awful, and as though it should have remained either an anime orSpeed_Racer.jpg computer animated, I have decided to write about the old and classically brilliant (and hillarious) Speed Racer.

Speed Racer is the title of an English adaptation of the Japanese anime Mach GoGoGo which centered on automobile racing.  Mach GoGoGo was first created, and designed, by Tatsuo Yoshida (1932–1977) as a manga series in the 1960s and successfully made the jump to TV as an anime series in 1967.

Speed Racer was quite a westernised anime, and this was due to the creator, Tatsuo Yoshida’s affinity for the United States through portrayals of American life in numerous films.

Despite their Westernization, the series stil falls into the familiar manga-anime storyline.  Speed Racer definitely resembles typical manga characterization of a teenage boy with superior skills, this this case, his amazing racing and driving skills, facing unreal adversity through a multitude of villains, something that is more common in Mech anime’s such as Neon Genesis Evangelion.

If you are contemplating going and watching the new Speed Racer movie…don’t, simply go out and buy the who series of the cartoon (or one of the two series available) as I am almost certain you will be much more entertained.  However, if your curiosity does in fact get the better of you, and you do end up watching this appaling adaptation of an anime movie, then please feel free to inform me of exactly what this movie is like.

Lolita

Posted by Kristen Barghout

More recently, animes have become more appealing to the male gender.  This is from the semi-recent introduction of Lolita’s within anime series’ and movies.

One of the most famous Lolita characters is Chii from Chobits, with her flowing dresses and sometimes gothic attire.  The question I want to ask is what gave the japanese the idea of creating such characters.

The first adult (Hentai) anime to come out came out in 1984, the english title being "Lolita Anime".  It is believe that the reason Lolita’s are used in more anime’s is because a high quantity of anime fans, more or less usually male, seem to have developed a Lolita complex.  This means that they are attracted to adults, with either a child like personality, or a very young appearance…so someone who is 24, but looks about 16ish.

Unlike Lolicon, I dont really see any problem with Lolita’s…in actual fact, its no different from people dressing up in school uniforms in order to seduce their partner.

Here is a list of some anime’s that may appeal to you, if you yourself have a lolita complex, though I think it necessary to tell you most of them are hentai.

Megatron!!!

Posted by Kristen Barghout

This is a bargain, and I have to tell EVERYONE about it.  www.animeexchange.co.uk have a Cybertron Leader Megatron for sale.

Just to let everyone know why this is so cool I have to tell everyone…well, the Cyberton Leader Megatron is really rare, so rare, even on ebay, it is hardly evermegatron_med.jpg there!  And yet, somehow,  Anime Exchange has managed to get a hold of a few.

The best part about this, is that even though they know just how rare this item is, they are selling it for only £44.99…I know that that is in fact a lot, but not in comparisson to ebay where I have seen people bid up to £75 for this one item.

Obviously, the price doesnt include the p&p, but come on, its a real bargain.  Now I would buy myself one of these, but however, I was one of those foolish people who decided to purchase it on ebay for an extraordinarily large amount of money, considering how cheap it is here.

seriously, all you transformers out there, get hold of this whilst you can, because soon you wont be able to get hold of them at all…even Play.com doesn’t have them anymore…neither amazon, and only very rarely does ebay.

I have used this company before and they are brilliant.  Fast delivery, and a perfect service, so trust me when I tell you to go and buy this now!!!

Paprika

Posted by Kristen Barghout

I recently purchased the popular and ground breaking anime Paprika.  For those of you who don’t know about this anime, it was recently (semi) released into the UK after its long awaited release.

paprika.gif

The animation style is ground-breaking, and once you have watch Paprika, you can fully understand why it was so awaited.  It’s just brilliant and beautiful, it really is, so much so, that can’t even really begin to tell you about it, so here is the synopsis:

The visually striking thriller is set in the not-too-distant future, where doctors are developing a groundbreaking new psychotherapy treatment called PT. This coincides with the invention of a device called the ‘DC Mini,’ which enables researchers to enter the dreams of a subject and explore matters of the unconscious mind. But one day, a ‘DC Mini’ prototype goes missing, and the doctors are thrown into a world of confusion. They realize how dangerous a turn of events this could be, and to ensure that things don’t spiral out of control, they embark on a mad quest to track down the missing prototype.

So anyway, any anime fan must see this film, it’s one of those few films that more or less everyone loves and appreciates!
